Hiking To Montgrí Castle
It’s been several days now since we arrived in Toroella de Montgri, but we haven’t yet managed to make our way up to the top of Montgri Massif and see the Castle. So, the day had finally come.
Given that the air temperature was really high and there were no trees, therefore no shade, we had to be prepared and make sure we will keep our bodies cool and hydrated.
Once we had everything ready, we began our way up to the summit. We chose to go in the morning, when the sun is not as powerful and it certainly made it easier. It takes around one-two hours to get to the top – depending on each individual – and it is definitely not an easy hike.
It’s mostly walking on sharp rock in really hot weather, but as long as you have enough water with you, wear the right clothes and cover your skip with sunscreen, you will be ok and as it’s not a competition you can take your time. Just fallow the red and white markings on the stones along the way and you will get there eventually.
After one hour or so, we were there, we were at the Castle. And we then realised that hiking all the way up for those views was more than worth it. Even though, for us, the hiking itself was just as rewarding.
Montgri Castle is nothing more than four walls, but considering that it’s been there since 1294 it is fairly impressive. It was built because of the existing conflict, at that time, between the counts of Empuries and the counts of Barcelona. But the fortress was actually never completed.
Nowadays, it is an amazing 360 view point over the surrounding areas: Bay of Roses, Empúries, Canigó Massif, the Pyrenees, Montseny Massif, the Gavarres Mountains, the Baix Ter and L’Estartit Bay with the Medes Islands.
