The Coast and beautiful Beaches of Pembrokshire
On our last day in Wales we decided to see two well known beaches in Pembrokeshire.
Having packed our tent we were now ready to hit the road. But not yet ready to head back to London.
We still had a full day ahead of us and that was not to be wasted. We asked a couple of locals what would they suggest we should see [in the time we had left] and we then went on our way.
Marloes Sands was our first stop. What an amazing scenery! Just like in the movies. No, literally! A movie scene from ‘Snow White & the Huntsman’ has been filmed on this approx. 1.5 km long and remote beach. Walking on this beach surrounded by cliffs gives great views of the nearby Islands: Skokholm and Grossholm.
Best time to visit is during low tide.
There is no entrance fee, only a car park fee. The car park is owned by The National Trust and you only pay if you aren’t a member of The National Trust.
We would have wanted to stay on Marloes Beach longer, but once again, we had to say goodbye and head on to the next point of interest:
Barafundle Bay
Voted many times as one of the best beaches in Great Britain and around the world, this pristine beach has also been the location of a British movie scene. And it only seems fair once you see what it has to offer.
The bay is isolated from the rest of the world, and the only access to the beach is by walking half a mile from the nearest car park (the car park belongs to The National Trust, so it’s free for members, or there is a £5 charge for non-members) . The walk itself is refreshing and on a beautiful sunny day, the views from the coastline are extraordinary. Sometimes, you can even get a glimpse of bottlenose dolphins and basking sharks.
Once we got to the beach, we understood why we have been urged to go and see it. Right before we started our descend from the coast cliffs, there it was, the most wonderful view: the beach and the bay with its crystal clear waters and that’s when we realised why it is often linked to a Caribbean beach. We then followed some stairs and we had finally arrived on the beach.
The weather was amazing, but even though it was summer, the water was really cold. Even so, most of the people that were on the beach and especially the children didn’t seem to be bothered by the water’s low temperature and they were truly enjoying themselves.
We dipped our feet in the water as we couldn’t resist the temptation, but unfortunately we didn’t have our swimwear with us. If we would have, a swim would have been ‘mandatory’ :), as it is so hard to resist the charm of this precious and secluded gem…Barafundle Bay.
